228 years UMCG
A small hospital, with only eight beds. That’s how the UMCG once began, 228 years ago. It is difficult to grasp the journey through time that little hospital in the center of Groningen has made since the autumn of 1797.
In 2022-’23 the UMCG celebrated an anniversary year, highlighting UMCG’s history and how the role of the UMCG has evolved in the course of those 225 years. If you would like to learn more about the history of the UMCG, please visit the following website: https://www.umcg.nl/225-years
City within the city
With more than 13.000 employees and 1.339 beds, the UMCG is one of the largest hospitals in the Netherlands.
The UMCG buildings are designed with the idea that the environment patients stay in can support the healing process.
The buildings are designed according to a 'city within the city' concept: by bringing the outside in, patients can continue to participate in society. This is why the hospital has brought the outside world inside, including a bookshop, a hairdresser, a chemist, a pharmacy, cafés, and a gift shop.
